Music

Music has always been an area of the curriculum that has been enjoyed enthusiastically by all our children. The standard of singing is very high and the development of the children’s confidence in artistic self expression is enviable amongst other schools.

It is our intention, however, to broaden and expand our musical life by further developing our children’s chances and experiences. We have already expanded our facilities, moving out of the upstairs music room in the house and creating a new, separate music school. This houses two purpose built sound-proofed practice rooms, a fully equipped teaching room, a small performance area and an additional room where there is a class set of electronic keyboards, for the children’s use in curriculum lessons.

The creation of the new music school gives us the chance to generate enhanced opportunities for our children to learn a wider variety of musical instruments. It is our intention to enable all children to choose, form a broad range of tuition, an instrument that they feel they would like to experience and learn.

Tuition is available in the following:

Singing

Recorder

Piano

Rhythm Guitar

Violin

‘Cello

Double Bass

Bass Guitar

Flute

Clarinet

Brass instruments

Drama

Drama is an area of special excellence, bringing together the diverse abilities of the pupils. Children participate in all areas of dramatic production from lighting and stage management to dance and performance. Drama is taught by Julia Stafford Northcote, a professionally qualified director, who spent several years directing the Shakespeare festival at Stafford Castle to wide acclaim.

The school performs two pieces per year; these usually include the highly popular Christmas pantomime and the end of year show. Each child in the school competes in the annual verse-speaking competition with the final held on Prize Day.

In addition the school is home to a local drama group, LOOKOUT. Children from the school and pupils from all over the county work together under expert tuition to produce work that is both challenging and varied. Individual tuition is also available for those children wishing to take LAMDA examinations.
