St Bede's school began in 1936 when Mr and Mrs. Cecil Stafford Northcote opened a boys preparatory school at Hawkesyard Priory, in Armitage. After the war the numbers had grown so dramatically that the school could no longer fit into Hawkesyard, so in 1946 the school moved to Bishton Hall.

Mr. Stafford Northcote led the school as it continued to flourish, achieving success in every area, ensuring countless scores of boys were accepted into the most prestigious public schools in the country. This tradition continues to this day.

In 1982 girls were welcomed to the school, some as day
children others as boarders in a specially converted flat, soon they would occupy the entire top floor. The 1980’s also saw the creation of the school’s nursery and pre-prep department as well as the construction of the art and design centre.

Three generations of the Stafford Northcote family have educated young people as additions to their own family, treating each child with care and respect. This has helped create an educational atmosphere unlike any other. The school was founded on Catholic principles, and these ideals are at the heart of the school today. Although St Bede's is a Catholic school, children of all faiths and denominations are welcomed.
